The objective of this article was to present the reading proficiency of students in the municipality of Bayeux in terms of reading and interpretation skills and competences based on data from the Brazilian educational system. Bibliographical research was used in the development, based on detailed analysis of data published on official websites with the Brazilian educational system, physical books and other materials already published in the literature and scientific articles published in electronic media. It was evidenced that the municipality of Bayeux is in a precarious situation, below the level of proficiency in reading and interpretation of students in the final stage of fundamental education, lacking emergency measures. The research showed that reading proficiency stems from a long-term process, requiring projects that develop skills and competences for students' personal lives.
